S-adenosylmethionine is the active form of L-methionine. L-methionine is the only essential amino acid that contains organically bound sulfur. The body cannot produce this amino acid itself, so it must be supplied externally.

S-adenosylmethionine acts as a methyl group carrier in the body and is thus involved in numerous physiological metabolic processes. It is also capable of making the sulfur it contains available to the body.

Methionine is a precursor for the synthesis of cysteine, carnitine, creatine, taurine, choline and is a building block of many protein molecules, hormones, neurotransmitters, DNA building blocks and phospholipids.

Cysteine ​​is the limiting amino acid in glutathione biosynthesis, an important detoxification process in the body. S-adenosylmethionine activates the binding of glutathione to foreign substances, allowing them to be more easily excreted.

L-methionine is also involved in the breakdown of histamine and is involved in antioxidant processes. This essential amino acid is found in many protein-rich foods. Plant foods include soybeans, millet, and peas. Animal foods include cheese, salmon, and beef.

SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine) is the active form of the amino acid methionine. SAM-e is rarely found in food, unlike its precursor methionine, from which it is formed in the body.
