Origin, Cultivation, and Use of the Polyporus Mushroom
The diameter of such a mushroom body, with its countless individual caps, can reach up to 50 cm, and its weight often amounts to several kilograms – in rare cases even up to forty pounds! Like the vital mushroom Maitake, the Polyporus belongs to the genus of bracket fungi. It is also known by the scientific name Dendropolyporus umbellatus and colloquially as branched Polypore or umbrella Polypore. The terms Grifola umbellata and Umbrella polypore are also occasionally used. In Asia, it is known as Chuling, Zhuling, Zhu Ling, and Chorei. The Polyporus is found everywhere in temperate climate zones, where it grows in deciduous forests, in oak and sometimes also beech stands, feeding on their root wood or deadwood. In Germany, it is quite rare but thrives nationwide. Its fruiting bodies can usually be harvested between July and September. The Polyporus is still a relatively unknown edible mushroom, but it is gaining increasing popularity due to its fine aroma and pleasant consistency. In China, its use as a vital mushroom was first documented 2,000 years ago. Targeted cultivation of Polyporus is possible, but currently still quite rare.
Polyporus Mushroom Ingredients
Perhaps the most interesting characteristic of Polyporus as a vital mushroom is the unusual variety of its ingredients, including a high concentration of calcium, iron, and potassium, as well as various B vitamins and the vitamin D precursor ergosterol. It also contains larger amounts of the trace elements copper, manganese, and zinc, as well as various specific polypeptides and polysaccharides. Particularly noteworthy are Polyporusterones A and B, which are considered antioxidants and thus protect against free radicals.
As with all vital plants, the concentration of ingredients in the untreated mushroom can vary greatly. Therefore, in the application and dosage of the Polyporus mushroom, a standardized processing is recommended, as guaranteed by Hawlik vital mushroom products.
