Origin, cultivation and use of the Agaricus mushroom
It has also been discovered that the mushroom species Agaricus brasiliensis is genetically identical to Agaricus blazei murrill – all three Latin names therefore refer to the same mushroom. Colloquially, the Agaricus is also known as the “sun mushroom” and “mushroom of life”. In Brazil, it is also called the “mushroom of the god”, and in China and Japan, it is known as “Himematsutake”. The Agaricus belongs to the genus of button mushrooms, as can be easily identified by its exterior, consisting of a white stem and a usually light brown, rounded cap. As the scientific name Agaricus brasiliensis suggests, the Agacricus mushroom is originally native to South America, more precisely to the Brazilian rainforest. There, as is now the case across the entire South American continent, it is a popular edible mushroom and known for its slightly nutty aroma. After being collected exclusively from the wild for a long time, the Agaricus has been cultivated commercially in fields since the early 1990s. It also grows extremely well on substrate—like all members of the mushroom genus. Agaricus cultivation has now spread to Asia as well.
Since the almond mushroom was only discovered in the 1950s and scientific interest in the mushroom only developed in the 1980s, it is still relatively unknown outside of Asia and South America and is the newest member of the Hawlik medicinal mushroom products.
Ingredients of the Agaricus mushroom
The medicinal mushroom Agaricus is characterized by a remarkably balanced ratio of valuable vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, as well as a particularly high polysaccharide content—the highest among medicinal mushrooms! It is particularly rich in mushroom-specific beta-glucans, a special type of polysaccharide that is contained in Agaricus extract in a particularly easily digestible form. Also worth mentioning is its high content of ergosterol, a precursor to vitamin D.
