5-HTPcan also be produced by the human body itself. It is formed as an intermediate in the synthesis of serotonin from the essential amino acid tryptophan. Serotonin has important functions in the central nervous system, but cannot penetrate the blood-brain barrier. It must first be synthesized in the brain. The majority of the 5-HTP ingested through food is metabolized in the liver and intestines and released into the blood as serotonin. A remaining portion of the 5-HTP can be transported across the blood-brain barrier directly into the brain, where it is used by nerve cells for serotonin synthesis. The amount of 5-HTP produced by the body depends on the availability of tryptophan and the activity of various enzyme systems.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitterand plays an important role in the cardiovascular system, the gastrointestinal tract, and the nervous system. In the central nervous system, it controls or influences sleep, temperature regulation, sensory perception, pain perception and processing, appetite, sexual behavior, and hormone secretion. At higher doses of 5-HTP, gastrointestinal side effects may occur, particularly nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. 5-HTP should not be used in conjunction with antidepressants due to a pharmacological interaction.
