Origin, cultivation, and use of the Maitake mushroom
In Germany, Maitake is officially known as Gemeiner Klapperschwamm, but usually simply as Klapperschwamm. The names Laubporling and (rarely) Spatelhütiger Porling are also common in German-speaking countries. Worldwide, it is also known as Hen-of-the-Wood and Kumotake. The Klapperschwamm (Grifola frondosa) is native to China, Northeast Japan, and North America, where it grows wild at the base of old deciduous trees – preferably oaks – from whose root wood it feeds. In Europe, it is almost never found in the wild anymore, partly because its substrate basis has become so rare. This is because old oak trees are now a rarity in Europe. In Japan and China, it has been used as an edible and medicinal mushroom for over 3,000 years. However, it has only been commercially cultivated since the beginning of the 1980s – before that, it was laboriously harvested by hand in the wild. Due to its pleasant aroma, it is now one of the most commonly used mushrooms in Japanese cuisine, but it is also important as a medicinal mushroom in Asia.
Ingredients of the Maitake mushroom
The Maitake mushroom is one of the powerhouses among medicinal mushrooms – because it contains a wonderfully balanced mixture of vital substances in high concentration. In addition to riboflavin, niacin, thiamine, biotin, and folic acid, it contains many minerals, including zinc, iron, potassium, and magnesium. Particularly noteworthy about the Maitake mushroom, however, is its remarkably high content of the vitamin D precursor ergosterol and the mushroom-typical beta-glucan Grifolan, a polysaccharide that has long been the subject of scientific research.
As with all vital plants, the concentration of ingredients in the untreated mushroom can vary greatly. Therefore, for the application and dosage of Maitake, standardized processing is recommended, as is guaranteed with HAWLIK medicinal mushroom products.
Maitake (Grifola frondosa), also known as Hen-of-the-Wood, is a traditionally valued edible and medicinal mushroom native to Japan and North America. It is characterized by its fan-like growth form and its versatile natural composition.
The most important ingredients of Maitake include:
Polysaccharides:
Complex carbohydrates that constitute a significant part of the mushroom.
Beta-glucans:
Natural dietary fibers typical of mushrooms.
Proteins and Amino Acids:
Maitake contains various essential and non-essential amino acids.
Vitamins:
Particularly B vitamins such as B1, B2, and niacin, as well as vitamin D (depending on processing), are present.
Minerals and Trace Elements:
These include potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc, among others.
Secondary Plant Compounds:
Natural compounds such as sterols and other mushroom-typical ingredients complete the profile.
Our Maitake products are made from carefully selected raw materials and gently processed to best preserve their natural ingredients. In capsule or powder form, Maitake can be easily and flexibly integrated into daily life.
