Origin, cultivation and use of the Hericium mushroom (Lion's Mane)
In China, where the Hericium mushroom is considered a delicacy due to its delicious aroma, it is known as “monkey head mushroom”. Other common names are “Pom-Pom”, “Yamabu-Shitake” and “Lion's Mane”. Caution: The mushroom species Hericium erinaceus should not be confused with its close relative, Hericium coralloides or “branched hedgehog mushroom”. The mushroom species Hericium erinaceus is found worldwide, including in Europe. The mushroom settles on the wounds of deciduous trees. It rarely grows wild today, but can be easily cultivated. It was first cultivated in the 1950s in Shanghai. In the Chinese region, the Lion's Mane is not only a coveted edible mushroom, but also has a firm place in traditional Chinese medicine. Meanwhile, other countries are also benefiting from the good experiences made in China with the Hericium mushroom: The Lion's Mane is now cultivated all over the world, including in Germany, where it is mainly used as a dietary supplement.
