Vitamin K has been known for a long time, but is not as well-known as many other vitamins. Nevertheless, vitamin K performs important functions in the human body. The "K" stands for "coagulation," which in biochemistry means the coagulation of proteins or blood clotting. The "K" can also be associated with "bone" and "K(C)alcium," because vitamin K contributes to the normal maintenance of bones.

Vitamin K promotes a natural bone protein called osteocalcin, which is important for bone formation. It also appears to counteract calcium deposits in blood vessels, thus reducing the risk of plaque buildup. Vitamin K regulates the transport and distribution of calcium in the body. This regulator is of great value and contributes to the maintenance of strong bones and healthy teeth. Vitamin K also supports the positive effects of vitamin D, a vitamin extremely important for metabolism. Vitamin K and vitamin D together form a functional relationship and are particularly responsible for calcium absorption.

Vitamin K describes a group of substances that are chemically linked to one another, and there are different variants. Plant-based foods, especially green vegetables, provide vitamin K1 (phylloquinone). In our intestines, on the other hand, vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is produced. This vitamin K2 has a more "gentle" effect on our blood clotting and has a longer half-life. The shorter the half-life (K1 = only 1.5 hours in the blood serum), the more the vitamin concentration in the blood fluctuates. K2, on the other hand, has a significantly longer half-life of up to 72 hours and thus contributes to normal blood clotting, i.e. K1 decreases quickly but significantly activates blood clotting. K2 remains stable for much longer and moderately activates blood clotting.

Although intestinal bacteria can produce K2, this endogenous production seems to be scarce – only a few vitamins are absorbed from the large intestine. Therefore, oral intake of K2 may be beneficial.

K2 comes in different forms (MK-4 and MK-7), which differ in their chemical structure. There is "MK-4" and "MK-7." The higher-quality MK-7 is divided into two further forms: "cis" and "trans." Only the trans MK-7 can be properly utilized by the body; it is completely vegan and has the longest half-life. Therefore, the highest possible "trans content" is important. Only products with a trans content of over 98% can be labeled "all-trans." Vegan vitamin K2 drops (MK-7 all-trans) are therefore the most valuable form that can be made available to the body and have high bioavailability.
