What types of vitamin K are there?

The term vitamin K encompasses a number of different substances. The most important are vitamin K1 (phylloquinone), which is obtained from green plants, and vitamin K2 (menaquinone), which is synthesized by bacteria. Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin; it can only be absorbed into the human body with the help of pancreatic enzymes.

Vitamin K1 requires additional bile acid, while vitamin K2 can be absorbed without it. On average, 20–70 percent of the vitamin in food is utilized, depending on the form of vitamin K present and the fats involved in absorption. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and poorly absorbed fat-soluble substances impair vitamin K absorption.

What is Vitamin K for?

In the body, vitamin K is stored primarily in the liver, but in relatively small amounts. Even though the human body can produce small amounts of vitamin K with its own intestinal flora, vitamin K is considered an essential nutrient. The main function of vitamin K is its contribution to normal blood clotting. Vitamin K contributes to the synthesis and activation of clotting factors, thereby accelerating blood clotting. Vitamin K is also extremely important for the maintenance of normal bones. Through the activation of osteocalcin and its involvement in calcium metabolism, vitamin K is directly involved in bone formation and bone health.
