The African devil's claw, also known as Harpagophytum procumbens or African devil's claw, grows in the savannas of southern Africa. As a wild plant, it is now endangered, which is why responsible production is a high priority for us. For our high-quality extract, we use exclusively cultivated plants from sustainable collections in Africa, as these provide the best conditions for devil's claw growth.

The widely branched underground storage roots are primarily harvested so that the primary root remains as the main root and can branch out again. Only harvesting from sustainable collections ensures the long-term survival of the plant.

The tuberous root contains valuable ingredients, such as harpagoside, a bitter compound belonging to the monoterpenes. The extract is obtained by finely grinding the powder and mixing it with water.

The devil's claw owes its eerie name to its claw-like appearance. Small barbs allow the above-ground part to catch on animal fur, thus ensuring its widespread distribution. The devil's claw belongs to the sesame family and should not be confused with the devil's claw, a member of the bellflower family that grows in the European Alps.
