The hormone melatonin is produced in the pineal gland in the human brain depending on the daily light-dark cycle. Serotonin, in turn, can be produced from the amino acid tryptophan. Melatonin production is inhibited by light, and this inhibition is lifted in the dark. This increases the production and release of melatonin. The melatonin level in the blood continues to rise after dark, reaching its peak at around 3 a.m. After that, the melatonin concentration decreases again.
