As simple sugars, such as glucose, but also in more complex forms that must first be broken down in the body. In this broken down form, the sugar is absorbed in the intestine and is available for energy production. Any excess is stored as glycogen or converted into fatty acids and stored. To move the sugar from the blood into the cells, insulin is needed. This insulin is produced by the beta cells in the pancreas. If there is too little insulin, the sugar does not reach the cells at all and therefore cannot be used to generate energy. It remains in the blood and must ultimately be disposed of via urine.
