Coenzyme Q10 belongs to the ubiquinone group and is found in the energy-producing "power plants" of cells, the so-called mitochondria, of all living organisms. In every human cell, energy from food is converted into the body's own energy. Coenzyme Q10 plays a key role in this conversion via electron transfer in the respiratory chain. The organs with the highest energy requirements (such as the heart, lungs, and liver) therefore also have the highest concentrations of coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble molecule and its structure is similar to vitamins E and K.

It is ingested through food but also produced within the body. This self-synthesis requires various B vitamins and amino acids. The body's own synthesis of coenzyme Q10 is generally sufficient in healthy individuals, so it is not considered an essential nutrient. However, in certain cases where this synthesis is impaired, external supplementation becomes crucial.

The body's own production of coenzyme Q10 decreases with age. The decline in coenzyme Q10 concentration with age is most noticeable in the heart. While 40-year-olds have around 30 percent less coenzyme Q10 in their heart muscle than healthy 20-year-olds, the coenzyme Q10 concentration in 80-year-olds is 50-60 percent lower. Older people should therefore pay particular attention to their supply status. A coenzyme Q10 deficiency can arise for various reasons. Either too little coenzyme Q10 is absorbed from food, the necessary vitamins and nutrients for the body's own production are lacking, or there is an increased need for coenzyme Q10, as is the case with competitive athletes or those with heart disease. Certain medications can also impair the supply of coenzyme Q10. Cholesterol and coenzyme Q10 are produced in the body via the same metabolic pathway. When cholesterol levels are elevated and the resulting use of statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs) decreases, not only the body's own cholesterol synthesis but also its own production of coenzyme Q10. Therefore, people who must take statins should ensure they have an adequate supply of coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 is found in the diet primarily in meat, liver, fish, and nuts.

Due to its high molecular weight and lipid solubility, the bioavailability of coenzyme Q10 is rather low. The simultaneous intake of fats and secondary plant substances, such as flavonoids, can increase the bioavailability of coenzyme Q10.
