The name Ashwagandha comes from Sanskrit and means "horse's smell." In this country, the plant is also known as winter cherry or Indian ginseng. Its botanical name is Withania somnifera, which roughly translates to "sleep-inducing" and explains its German name, sleep berry.

Native primarily to Asia and Africa, the plant enjoys great popularity in Ayurvedic medicine, for example. Ancient sources indicate that Withania somnifera was already used in Mesopotamia. The plant has been known in Europe since the 16th century. Ashwagandha's versatile uses include amulets and a tonic known as Medharasayana, which means "promotes learning and memory."

Although its name suggests the use of its fruit, only the leaves and roots of the plant can be used. At HAWLIK, we use only the root without any added or processed animal products, which is why our Green Line Ashwagandha is 100% vegan.

The key ingredients of Withania somnifera are withanolides, particularly withaferin A and withanolide D, as well as withanolide glycosides. Withanolides are natural chemical compounds that are classified as secondary plant substances. The extract contains a particularly high proportion of withanolides. Ashwagandha also contains alkaloids, organic compounds of a basic nature.
