Alpha-lipoic acid can regenerate antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, and glutathione that have been depleted in the body. Alpha-lipoic acid can perform its functions in both water-soluble and fat-soluble environments. Alpha-lipoic acid is found in larger quantities in organ meats, for example. However, it can also be produced by the body itself.

Alpha-lipoic acid can increase the effect of blood sugar-lowering medications. Concomitant treatment with alpha-lipoic acid and cisplatin (a cancer drug) can lead to a loss of cisplatin's effectiveness. Since alpha-lipoic acid can bind minerals, the intake of additional mineral supplements should be delayed.
