Why Judas's Ear?

The Auricularia mushroom owes its German name Judasohr (Judas's Ear) to the Christian legend, according to which Judas is said to have hanged himself from an elder tree – the tree species on which Auricularia grows particularly frequently and thrives abundantly. In combination with its ear-shaped fruiting bodies, this gave rise to the name Judasohr.

What are Mu-Err mushrooms?

Although the Mu-Err mushroom (also called Mu-Er, Mu-Erh or Black Fungus) is almost always equated with the mushroom Auricularia auricula-judae, which is common in Germany, strictly speaking, the Mu-Err mushroom is an East Asian mushroom species extremely similar to Judas's Ear: Auricularia polytricha, a popular and very common edible and medicinal mushroom throughout Asia. However, the medicinal mushroom from which our Auricularia medicinal mushroom products are made is always the European Judas's Ear, Auricularia auricula-judae.

Origin, cultivation and use of the medicinal mushroom Judas's Ear

Where does Judas's Ear grow wild? The Auricularia mushroom Auricularia auricula-judae grows on deciduous trees, particularly on old elder wood. It is a weak parasite and feeds on the dead wood of still living trees. Judas's Ear is native to almost all of Europe and, due to its frost resistance, also grows wild almost all year round.

Judas's Ear – cultivation and use

Judas's Ear thrives well on sawdust, which has enabled commercial cultivation of the mushroom. Due to its somewhat chewy consistency and mild, almost neutral taste, and its high density of vital substances, it is less common in Europe as an edible mushroom than as a medicinal mushroom.

Ingredients of Judas's Ear

Like all medicinal mushrooms, the Auricularia mushroom is rich in minerals, trace elements and vitamins. It also has a particularly high content of iron, potassium and magnesium and contains beta-D-glucans as well as a unique, specific Auricularia biopolymer (EBP) and various specific lectins. These have increasingly come into the focus of science in recent years and are the subject of various studies. This is also why Judas's Ear was chosen as the Mushroom of the Year 2017 by the German Society for Mycology.

As with all medicinal plants, the concentration of active ingredients in the untreated mushroom can vary greatly. For the application and dosage of the Auricularia mushroom, a standardized processing is therefore recommended, as is guaranteed with Hawlik medicinal mushroom products.

Judas's Ear: These dosage forms are available from Hawlik:

Auricularia Powder Capsules

The classic: the whole, gently dried fruiting bodies of Judas's Ear are always ground. Each capsule contains 500 mg of pure medicinal mushroom powder. Application and dosage: two Auricularia powder capsules twice a day with plenty of liquid with meals.

Auricularia Extract Capsules

Highly concentrated dosage through extraction to 30% polysaccharides. With an extra dose of vitamin C due to added acerola. Each capsule contains 300 mg of medicinal mushroom extract and 40 mg of acerola extract (equivalent to 7 mg of vitamin C). By extracting the Judas's Ear mushroom, the ingredients in the extract are about 20 times more concentrated than in Auricularia powder. Our Auricularia extract capsules are accordingly effective. Application and dosage: two extract capsules twice a day with plenty of liquid with meals.

Auricularia Extract and Powder Capsules

The customer favorite that combines the benefits of extract and powder: on the one hand, the bioavailable polysaccharides from the extract, on the other hand, the pure mushroom powder in its original form. Each vegetable capsule contains 250 mg Auricularia extract, 150 mg Auricularia powder and 8.5 mg natural vitamin C. Application and dosage: two capsules twice a day with plenty of liquid in the morning and at midday with meals.

Auricularia Powder

ideal for mixing into water, but can also be mixed very well with food and is therefore suitable, for example, for swallowing problems. Made from whole, gently dried and ground fruiting bodies of Judas's Ear to preserve all nutrients, vitamins and trace elements as much as possible. Application and dosage: Add 1 level measuring spoon of Auricularia powder to plenty of liquid daily and drink. Alternatively, mix with food. One measuring spoon corresponds to approx. 3 g of powder.
